The SSBE was founded in 1970 and is, today, well established at the Swiss universities and companies. One of the goals of the Society is to build a network for education, research, manufacturing and politics within the background of biomedical engineering (BME). With the organization of regular scientific meetings, all these fields are brought together. Annual scientific awards stimulate also younger members to play an active role in the Society.
Two long terms plans of the Society are a stronger integration of small and large companies in the SSBE, and to become an important partner with respect to BME education at the different cantonal universities, the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology in Lausanne and Zürich, and the universities of applied sciences.
With this in mind, the SSBE aims at establishing contacts, exchanges of information and experience, as well as cooperation between industrial, teaching and scientific professionals who want to apply physical and technical concepts to biology and medicine.
The official organ of the SSBE is the journal "Biomedizinische Technik/Biomedical Engineering (BMT)" published by de Gruyter.
BMT is a high-quality forum for the exchange of knowledge in the fields of biomedical engineering, medical information technology and biotechnology/bioengineering. As an established journal with a tradition of 50 years, BMT addresses engineers, natural scientists, and clinicians working in research, industry, or clinical practice.
As part of this affiliation, each SSBE member has the option to purchase a personal subscription. The fee for this subscription is a special reduced rate arranged between the SSBE and de Gruyter.
